Mahliqa specialises in hand knitted and hand crocheted wire jewellery using gemstones and swarovski elements. Mahliqa’s designer, Suraya, is a London-born British Asian, and her colour palette reflects that eastern heritage. Reminiscent of jewellery worn by Indian royalty of old, her collections seek to recapture the elegance and opulence of a bygone era in its design. Her use of wire with the traditional crafts of knitting/crocheting and other jewellery techniques creates pieces that have an ethereal beauty, evoking a feeling of preciousness – jewellery you need to own and protect. This ethereal quality is intimated in the name ‘Mahliqa’, which translates as ‘moon’s essence’. As well as finished jewellery, Mahliqa also produces wire knitting kits for aspiring wire jewellery makers. Mahliqa regularly exhibits at fairs & designer shows around the country, and Suraya is currently working on a book about her wire jewellery and designs. She welcomes private commissions and has created many bespoke pieces for private clients.
